My daughter had to break her first heart, today. She has fallen out of love with Her First Love and had to end it. She felt so hugely guilty about hurting his feelings that she cried for him, not herself.

She has a big heart, my kid. So big, that she somehow fell in love with the dumbest guy on earth, a kid she goes to school with. This is a kid we found sitting at the bottom of a hill one day, and when we asked where he lived so we could give him a ride home, he couldn't tell us.

We had to call the nanny, who gave us directions that led us to the top of the hill he was sitting at the bottom of when we found him. We asked what he was doing and he said he liked to sit there and watch the kids at the high school fight with each other.

This kid was seventeen at the time. I told my daughter that for Xmas, I was going to get the guy a collar and a tag with his name and address on it with the legend 'If found . . .'.

But he's also a guy who gave her cards and presents and held doors for her. He was a sweet dumb guy. And breaking up is never easy at any age, especially when it is young, first love. And my baby girl is positively swimming with my drama genes. So this is how I know that you should go watch Denis Leary's Lock and Load DVD. I let the kid stay up late and watched it with her to get her laughing and not crying.
