If this comes as a surprise to you , you haven't been paying attention.
"(CNN) -- A U.S. military investigation has found four incidents in which guards at the Guantanamo Bay prison mishandled the Quran, but said that it was detainees who threw the Muslim holy book in the toilet.
The report said it confirmed four times when U.S. personnel at the base mishandled the Quran: guards kicked a detainee's Quran; a guard's urine "splashed" a detainee and his holy book and guards in a water balloon fight that resulted in two detainees' Qurans getting wet.
In a fifth confirmed incident, it could not be determined whether a guard or a detainee wrote a two-word obscenity in a Quran."
You think the White House will accuse its military investigators of causing any deaths which result from their investigation? Or will the military investigators issue an apology and retraction, stating that their sources decided to back off elements of the investigation which support their findings?
I knew a month ago that Newsweek had either been deliberately set up in an effort to discredit anything else the magazine had to say about the administration OR that the source of their story had been intimidated into backing down. This quote from Newsweek says a lot to me:
( from this report)
"(Newsweek editor Mark) Whitaker disputed the notion the Newsweek report was the sole cause of the rioting that rocked eastern Afghanistan last week.
He said everyone at Newsweek "behaved professionally" in producing the report, and that the magazine went to the "extraordinary length" of showing the story to a Pentagon official for a response before publication.
"That official challenged other aspects of the story, but not the Quran detail," Whitaker said. He said no U.S. officials complained about the accuracy of the report for 11 days, until after the Afghan riots broke out."
This is what Rumsfeld had to say those eleven days later: "People lost their lives. People are dead. People need to be very careful about what they say, just as they need to be careful about what they do."
I'm so disgusted with and discouraged by our government. It's become so thoroughly corrupted that nothing they say can be believed. People died? Get out of Afghanistan and it'll stop. Find another way to get the oil and get out.
