A picture which has nothing to do with anything I'm going to say. It was just a nice day.
. . .

My middle girl got a letter today from a friend who's serving on a warship in Japan. They both collect Star Wars trading cards and he sent her his extra Master Replicas Yoda. The kid isn't old enough to vote into or out of office the man who's sending him into war and he's out there, learning to aim guns, build boats and trading cards with his friends back home.

This makes me terribly sad. Sad and angry and afraid for him. How does he go from trading cards to war in a week's time? How do they tell this kid he isn't old enough to make a mature decision about drinking but he's mature enough to decide when to kill someone? How do they convince him it makes sense to trust him to protect the nation when they don't trust him to make an intelligent choice about its future with his vote? It makes no sense at all to me.

What do I tell her if he gets hurt? What possible explanation is there for a young man to be hurt or killed for this unspeakably corrupt administration? It isn't possible to justify, it just isn't.
